TV Drama trailers
1. An activity for your blog
Inbetweeners
Complete for homework by November 2

Three Series of The Inbetweeners .....
Choose one trailer to deconstruct in detail
How are young people represented in the trailer you choose?

Compare and contrast all three trailers
What similarities and differences do you notice between the different trailers and the way the characters are represented in them? What does this imply about how the audience's expectations of the programme have developed over time?

2. An activity in class
Desperate Romantics and Downton Abbey

We will watch the trailers for two period dramas (links below) and make notes in preparation for a written response to the following question.

How are camera shots and movement used in each trailer to represent (construct an impression of) the characters and the period (= time, place, way of life, attitudes etc) in which the trailer is set ?

We may also begin to deconstruct the impact of the editing (ie the transitions between shots which are created after the filming has been completed) if things go well!

The representation of young (age 16 -24) people in TV Drama

Choose any TV Drama. It could be one you know well or an experiment into new territory. US or British is fine.
Watch an episode carefully and create a blog post about how you think young people are represented in it through

  • their character roles and characterisation
  • storylines involving them
  • relationships with each other and other characters
  • any stereotypes you notice
  • use of mise en scene (locations/costumes/props/lighting etc)

and (if you can) the sound, camera work and editing.
Remember to include photos (screen shots?) , clips and links - perhaps to the programme's website or to online reviews.
It's a blog not an essay!
The story so far ......

Homework 2
My TV Drama (due October 5)

If you don't have at least two posts on your blogs covering this ground then you are already behind on the course.

If you haven't yet set up your TV Drama blog then sorry, but perhaps you are on the wrong course .....
